The Salt Grass Trail Ride is the "Daddy-Of-Em-All", started in 1952, as the kick-off event for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the biggest rodeo event inthe United States. It reenacts the trail ride of pioneer cattlemen and their herds to Houston from the rich salt grass pastures on the Texas Gulf Coast. More than 6,000 riders participate.

Celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, the Salt Grass Trail Ride boasts more than 1,500 riders and 28 wagons. Furthermore, it planted the seeds for a dozen more trail rides, 10 from across Texas and two others originating in Logansport, Louisiana and Reynosa, Mexico (see sidebar).

The trail ride was started in 1953 by Pat Flaherty, Reese Lockett, E.H. Marks, and John Warnasch. It originally began in Brenham and ended at the Rodeo Parade in downtown Houston.

The Salt Grass Trail Ride was initiated in 1951 by four individuals as a means to promote what was then called the Houston Fat Stock Show and Rodeo. The original ride was from Brenham, Texas, to Houston. Today, the Salt Grass begins in Cat Spring, Texas, and travels 90-plus miles to Houston, culminating with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
